Nestled in the rolling hills of Montalcino, Terralsole is more than just a winery—it’s a dream turned reality, a place where passion for winemaking, art, and music come together in perfect harmony. Founded in 1996 by Mario Bollag and his wife Athena Tergis, Terralsole’s story is as rich and captivating as the wines it produces. In this article, we’ll explore the art of winemaking at Terralsole and what makes our wines a unique expression of Montalcino’s terroir.
A Dream Brought to Life
Terralsole, meaning “Land Toward the Sun,” was born from Mario Bollag’s vision of combining his love of Tuscany, art, and fine wine. The estate’s origins are deeply rooted in a desire to craft wines that not only reflect the stunning landscape of Montalcino but also embody the artistic and soulful essence of its founders. Athena’s musical talent and Mario’s experience as an artist have imbued Terralsole with a spirit of creativity that is reflected in every vintage.
The Unique Terroir of Montalcino
What makes Montalcino such a special place for winemaking? The answer lies in the terroir—a delicate balance of soil composition, climate, and elevation that gives Brunello di Montalcino its renowned elegance and complexity. Terralsole’s vineyards are strategically planted on two distinct properties: Pian Bossolino and Fonte Lattaia, each offering unique characteristics that influence the flavor profiles of our wines.
Pian Bossolino
High-elevation vineyards with marl and limestone soils, ideal for slow ripening and producing wines with expressive aromas.
Fonte Lattaia
Lower-elevation vineyards with marine deposits and clay, providing robustness and structure to our Sangiovese grapes.
Sustainable and Organic Practices
At Terralsole, respect for nature is not just a philosophy but a way of life. Our commitment to organic farming and sustainable viticulture is evident in every step of our winemaking process. From using organic fertilizers and cover crops to preserving biodiversity, we ensure that our vineyards remain healthy and productive for generations to come. In 2018, we proudly achieved 100% Organic Certification, a testament to our dedication to environmental stewardship.
Crafting Wines with Soul and Science
Winemaking at Terralsole is a delicate balance between art and science. Harvest is conducted with meticulous care, with Mario and Athena personally overseeing the handpicking of grapes at peak ripeness. The grapes are transported in small boxes to preserve their integrity and gently de-stemmed before fermentation. Our state-of-the-art cantina features temperature-controlled tanks, allowing us to extract maximum color, aroma, and flavor.
Aging Process
Aging takes place in 600-liter Tonneaux oak barrels from France’s Allier forest, a unique practice in Montalcino that adds depth and character to our Brunello di Montalcino. Each wine is a masterpiece, reflecting our dedication to quality and the unique terroir of our land.
